GBIC
Una interfaz Gigabit Converter (GBIC, por sus siglas en inglés) es un módulo que está disponible en muchas formas, dependiendo del modelo y el fabricante de la marca. Cada uno tiene la misma función, que es aumentar la velocidad de transferencia de datos a través de una red. Las empresas que necesitan transferir grandes cantidades de datos rápidamente, a veces utilizan un módulo GBIC para un mayor control y rentabilidad.
Un módulo GBIC le permite a los usuarios reconfigurar enlaces de fibra, configurar los costos de adaptar el receptor y enlazar distancias de red y topologías basadas en requerimientos establecidos. Usados en una fibra óptica o en un sistema de Ethernet, los módulos GBIC se pueden actualizar, cambiar o conectar sin tener que apagar la computadora. Esta flexibilidad elimina la necesidad de sustituir todo el sistema de redes junto.
