The typical application of this distributor is to convert the classic linear bus topology of the RS485 interface into a star topology. Therefore each device to be controlled is connected from this hub and not from another chained device. This device amplifies the signals and avoids the loss of data caused when this concentrator is not used.

An equivalent definition published by the ITU is called V.24.
