The IP65 standard defines a specific level of protection provided by electrical and electronic equipment enclosures against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids.

This protection rating is governed by the international standard IEC 60529, where the first digit (6) indicates total protection against contact and the ingress of dust, ensuring the system is hermetically sealed against fine particles. The second digit (5) certifies resistance against low-pressure water jets from any angle using a 6.3 mm nozzle. This classification is essential for devices operating in industrial environments where cleaning, humidity, or airborne particles could compromise the integrity of internal circuits.

The adoption of this standard has transformed the deployment of critical infrastructure and IoT devices in outdoor environments. Its balance between manufacturing cost and sealing level allows outdoor displays and industrial sensors to maintain continuous operation without bulky secondary protection, optimizing thermal dissipation despite the enclosure's airtightness.

Ingress Testing

To achieve IP65 certification, equipment undergoes a vacuum test to ensure no dust particles enter. It is then subjected to a water spray test where the water volume must not impair the device's function or accumulate near critical components.
